Santa Barbara Bacara Resort & Spa Event Photography – MVKA Productions Part I

June 22nd, 2009

Hey everyone,

This is Pye again. I am on a blogging role tonight, so I might as well catch up a bit more and post some of our other MVKA Production shoots. This was a shoot that we did with MVKA Productions at the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara about half a year or so ago. Once again, I must give credit to the amazing work that MVKA Productions did on putting this entire thing together. We took before and after shots for the crew, and you wouldn’t believe how these locations were completely transformed.

Anyway, without further adieu, here are the shots from part I of our shoot.

Here was the completed banquet room at the Bacara Resort after MVKA worked their magic.

The Bacara Resort staff were nice enough to let us hop up onto the balcony of the banquet room to grab this birds-eye view of the room.

While this was actually the second day of the shoot, I thought I would group it into this post since it is a new setup of the same Bacara Resort banquet room. I love MVKA’s lighting crew, their setups are so much fun to shoot!

Day 2 of our shoot, the new setup takes place in the Santa Barbara Bacara Resort courtyard. Oh, and yes, that massive centerpiece was brought in, and those are real flowers.

Of course we had to hang around until it got dark, how else would we snag shots of MVKA Productions lighting setups?

We love finding unique shots, this is a shot of the Bacara Resort courtyard through one of the valet entrances.

Below is a nice timelapse shot of the entire scene in the Bacara courtyard. Richard Marx performed a great accoustic show that night. But, again sorry folks, for legal reasons we can’t post those pics =(.

Palm Desert JW Marriott Event Photography – MVKA Productions

June 22nd, 2009

Hey guys,

A little while ago we had the opportunity of working with one of our favorite major event coordination companies, MVKA Productions, in Palm Desert. We get to shoot with MVKA a few times each year, and each time it is a pleasure! MVKA Productions is an award winning event production company that produces major events throughout the world including Canada’s Grammy equivalent The Juno’s.  It is amazing to see how they turn huge empty ballrooms into amazing masterpieces. Anyway, here are a few of the shots that we took at the JW Marriott Hotel this go around with MVKA.

To check out more of their work, visit the MVKA Production website.

Below is a center shot of the Palm Desert JW Marriott’s Spring Ballroom.

mvka-jw-marriott-palm-desert-event-photography-0021

In order to capture the ambiance of the lighting in the Spring Ballroom, we used 15-30 second exposures while painting light into dark areas of the scene.

Close up shot of the flower details on the stage.

While the Palm Desert JW Marriott has quite the array of props, settings, and decorations; MVKA Productions actually brought in pretty much everything you see in these pictures. Including the massive stage pieces. In all, it was something like 4 full size 48″ trailers.

Here is a close up of the stage where Sheryl Crow performed for the event. It was an awesome concert and we got amazing pictures! Too bad we can’t post them due to legal reasons =(

Newport Beach Wedding Photography – Marriott Hotel & Spa – Nancy & Ravi

June 21st, 2009

A couple of weekends ago, Chris, Justin, and Sarah had the opportunity to capture the moments of Nancy & Ravi’s wedding. The Indian wedding was a 3 day shoot for our studio. The Friday and Saturday posts can be found here (Mehendi Party – Friday, the Grah Shanti – Saturday Morning)

One of the most beautiful aisles I’ve ever photographed, the aisle at Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa was lined with beautiful statues like the ones below.
1-newport-beach-marriott-wedding

The Baraat, or marriage procession, is always full of smiles. This beautiful woman is waiting on the bride’s side for the groom to arrive. The Newport Beach Marriot Hotel & Spa accommodated this aspect of the Indian Wedding very well, as the bride’s side of the family waited on the upper level of the parking lot, right outside the ceremony site; and the groom and his family started from the bottom level of the parking lot and moved their way up slowly.
3-baraat-indian-wedding-newport-beach

This image of the Baraat is the moment when the grooms side of the family arrives at the ceremony site and is welcomed by the bride’s side. The mothers of both the bride and groom are dancing in the center of the circle right outside the entrance of the Indian Wedding ceremony.
4-baraat-indian-wedding

Another tradition of an Indian Wedding ceremony is stealing the grooms shoes after he takes them off on the Mandap. This image is of the groom’s cousin emerging from the battle for the shoes.
5-indian-wedding-newport-beach

The Indian Wedding ceremony was full of emotion, from fun smiles and laughs to solemn blessings and rituals.
6-indian-wedding-ceremony

As with all weddings (but especially Indian weddings), we love getting in close on the details, as the combination of Mehendi, vibrant colors, and unique ceremony rituals make these images interesting.
7-indian-wedding-ceremony-newport

During the Indian Ceremony, Ravi & Nancy read each other vows, making promises to each other.
8-marriott-wedding

Nancy has a very cute laugh! And the Newport Beach weather that day provided great outdoor lighting.
9-indian-wedding-orange-county

Here’s another part of the Indian Wedding ceremony that looks great close up. I think it’s kind of cute the way the toes are interacting in this scene.
10-indian-wedding-photographer

Our eyes are always naturally drawn to facial expressions; so having some images without focuses our attention on other details of the moment.

During the Indian Wedding ceremony, there is advice/blessings given to the bride.
13-indian-wedding-photography

After the Indian Wedding ceremony, there are hundreds of hugs, such as this one between the bride and the mother of the groom.

Another hug after the ceremony.

The Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa’s outdoor wedding reception area had a beautiful arrangement of food and drinks.

The Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa’s outdoor wedding reception area had a full bar that happened to be back lit, producing this shot.

During the reception at Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa’s outdoor wedding reception area, there was a great Indian dance by their good friend
21-marriott-reception

An emotional moment at the wedding, when the bride’s mother and father gave a joint toast.
22-reception-indian-wedding

The party favors for the Indian Wedding were these colored boxes, full of spices. We thought that this made a great display/stage for the ring, in front of a row of lit candles.

Los Angeles Event Photography – Bordello Bar – Calista Wu – Prologue CD Release Party

June 17th, 2009

Hey everyone,

Yesterday, I had the chance to see my good friend from college release her debut album. Calista Wu, with guest performances by Tatum Jones, rocked the stage at Bordello Bar in Los Angeles, CA. The environment of Bordello is vintage, with a Victorian feel draped in the glow of red lights. The location often hosts live jazz, blues, European club music, and burlesque shows. The venue is intimate, seductive, and a perfect venue for Calista Wu and Tatum Jones to sing to their audience. Calista Wu – Prologue can be purchased through Amazon, iTunes, and directly at her site at www.calistawu.com

The night started off with Tatum Jones singing original songs like ‘wing man’ and a few covers, like New Edition’s “Still in Love”.

Corona Engagement Photography – Josh and Cheyenne – Part II

June 13th, 2009

This is Pye again… duh…

Ok, so after we shot at the lake (and I killed my boat) Josh and Cheyenne rescued me from my boat and we left the lake to go shoot some other locations around Corona. Here are the shots, enjoy!

Like usual Lin and Jirsa Fashion, we started the shoot with a nice set of portraits.

corona-engagement-photography-1

As Will Ferrell put so well, “Come in for the real thing!” Those eyes are deadly Cheyenne.

corona-engagement-photography-9

Why do standard ring shots when you can do them Lin and Jirsa style! =)

corona-engagement-photography-10

So we finished up the portrait session, now we started getting loose.

corona-engagement-photography-2

We found this huge dead tree that made such a great bench! Except for all the bugs attacking Josh and Cheyenne, but they were troopers.

corona-engagement-photography-3

Headed out to a gorgeous field filled with wild grass.

corona-engagement-photography-6

Time to switch it up a little, your turn for the hat Josh.

corona-engagement-photography-5

Nothing beats shooting engagement or wedding photos with clouds in the sky, a little dodging here, burning there and you have some serious sky drama.

corona-engagement-photography-7

Spotted this grafitti near where we were shooting. Love shooting engagement photos over wild textures and urban grafitti.
