Island Hotel Newport Beach Wedding Reception | Adam and Desiree

March 16th, 2010

Even though the wedding was running a little behind, the guests were all having a great time at the reception. There were great speeches, poignant first dances, a fun cake cutting, and a countless number of timeless moments at this event. Besides the few images below, you can see more of it in the slideshow a few posts up.

After the most upbeat grand entrance I had ever seen, the couple went right into the Hora. As our bride and groom were lifted high into the air, we caught some great expressions.

During the reception, Adam and Desiree went through many Jewish wedding traditions, including the blessing and cutting of the bread, depicted below.

The catering at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach served delicious food with flavor that matched its presentation.

The father daughter dance on the Island Hotel dance floor in Newport Beach was a great moment in the wedding.

Desiree’s cousin performed on the saxophone, as the guests hit the dance floor.

Soul Rebel Alliance Concert Photography | Adam and Desiree’s Wedding

March 15th, 2010

Two members of the Soul Rebel Alliance, a great soul, funk, reggae group kept the party going well into the evening. You may recognize Kai Kalama from American Idol a couple of years back, when he made it into the later rounds of the competition. Their impressive repertoire of music ranged from slower songs like “More than Words” by Extreme and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to faster dance songs by Lady Gaga.

Fullerton Arboretum Engagement Photography | Mondo and Zahari

March 13th, 2010

On a beautiful spring day, we took Mondo and Zahari out to the Fullerton Arboretum for their engagement pictures. We’ve shot here a couple times before; and each time, we find new nooks and crannies with unique backdrops and creative framing opportunities. Mondo and Zahari were great and so much fun to be around. We kept pushing our stay at the Fullerton arboretum, with a few run-ins with the security and staff. But, as always, imagery came before any regulations; and we finished after a lot of great shots. And besides, (venue) rules were meant to be at least bent a little right? Despite the distractions, the natural couple was able to stay in the flow of things, showing their natural affection and giving us their candid expressions throughout the day.

After the shoot we grabbed a bite to eat and said goodbye until their wedding day (which we can’t wait for by the way)! We hope you enjoy the images; and congrats again!

In classic LJP fashion, we started the day with a nice portrait session.  The Fullerton Arboretum has dozens of awesome, private spots for these types of shots.

The high dynamic range of the gorgeous landscape of the Fullerton Arboretum in the day time was perfect for a couple of HDR engagement photography shots. Zahari and Mondo were great at holding still, as we fired away a few consecutive shots.

After the Arboretum, we went out into the street of Fullerton for more creative shots, playing with the traffic as our foreground.

Matthew Kent what great shots! Nice work.
anastasia i tend to think that the fullerton arboretum is boring, but perhaps i need to be more open-minded about the place and maybe i'll think much differently when i actually have people to pose for me on location. these pictures are great!

Balboa Fun Zone Newport Beach Engagement Photography | Nate and Claire

March 12th, 2010

A week ago I hung out with Claire and Nate at the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach. We took full advantage of the playful environment of the Balboa Fun Zone, snapping a few shots on the Ferris Wheel, the Carousel, and over in the arcade. The textures and colors, unique colors, and outgoing couple made my job as a photographer, as I only needed to set up each shot and let the environment and their personalities take over and create the shot. Having rained that morning, the clouds created a beautiful cover for many images and a unique backdrop for other photographs.

Nate looks exactly like my friend Phil from back and high school, so after slipping up a few times, I gave up and Nate is not willing to go by Phil. I had a great time with these two; and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding in the Fall of this year.

My first time shooting a couple on a carousel at the Balboa Fun Zone was quite challenging. It seemed like every other shot had a bar in front of one of their faces, and as I almost always prefer low apertures, my focus had to be right on. I cam away with a few great expressions, as Claire and Nate spent a few minutes getting dizzy.

I wanted to draw focus to Claire’s beautiful eyes in this image by using a thin crop. We found a great shaded spot for portraits in the buildings right next to the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach.

I love finding natural frames for my shots, like this boat rental structure created for this engagement picture at the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach.

The little shops on the side of Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach create a lot of fun shots with the right couple.

The nice textures of the building around Balboa Fun Zone create great shade, and Claire and Nate really knew how to make each other laugh.

Handsome as always, here’s Nate adorning his summer gardening hat.

We went ended at the beach next to the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach hoping to get a few sunset shots, but as you can see in the picture, the clouds were rolling in. We were able to fire off a few jumping shots before mother nature decided that we were done for the day.

I originally wanted to go on the Carousel at Balboa Fun Zone with them, but the operator said that I would have to be on the opposite side of them to balance it out.  Instead, I was stuck on the ground, but this gave me a unique perspective with a dramatic sky as my backdrop.

Linh and Andy Slideshow | Santa Clara and Saratoga Wedding Photography

March 12th, 2010

A couple of weekends ago, I had the chance to shoot the wedding of Linh and Andy up in the Bay Area. For their wedding, the couple decided to get married at the Santa Clara Mission, a beautiful church right on the campus of Santa Clara University. After the short ceremony, we took a few formals and went over to Hakone Gardens, a beautiful Japanese garden where they filmed parts of the movie Memoirs of a Geisha. The overcast day provided amazing lighting in the entire garden, from the bridge over the pond to the bamboo forest. After the gardens, we went up to the Mountain Winery where we ended the night with a reception hall full of wild guests. This was a great wedding overall, and I’m very happy to have met such great people. Special thanks to Connie Le, a friend from college and fellow photographer who helped on this event.
