Bride’s Tip | Planning for Family Formals

February 20th, 2011

The following is an entry with some tips for our brides (and grooms of course). For more tips, check out “Tips for Your Wedding Day” on our main site. These blog entries are in addition to the tips you’ll find on our website that we update every once in a while. To see all of them, please click here.

Standing in high heels and a heavy wedding dress in the exact same spot holding the same smile for an hour isn’t exactly the most appealing part of the wedding day. Efficiency is key in planning for family formals. Here’s a guide to help things run smoothly.

1) Have your formals immediately after the ceremony when everyone is gathered and in one place (with seating).
2) Have the officiant announce for the family (and whomever else you want in the formal pictures) to stick around.
3) Assign family members from each side to organize and keep the formals flowing. Choose the loudest, most brash family member you can think of :).
4) Be organized with a detailed list of each grouping. A list on the program is a great way to inform family members when they should be in pictures.

Bride’s Tip | Provide a List of Must-Have Shots

January 19th, 2011

Providing a list of must-have shots is a great way to ensure that nothing important is missed at the wedding. The list should be fairly short, listing only those items and shots that are unique, different, or easy-to-miss.

For example, we already know that we have to capture images of the wedding dress, the wedding rings, and the bouquets, so these items can be excluded from the list. However, we might need to be reminded that you’re wearing grandma’s earrings. You basically want to mention objects associated with meaningful moments or people and smaller or easy-to-miss details that you’ve put a lot of time and effort into. For example, if he’s wearing Laker cuff links and he’s a huge Laker’s fan, please mention this in the list. Or if the candy bar is tucked away in the corner of a side room, please make sure this is on the list as well.

Also, we’re going to choose couples session location based on our judgement of the lighting and backgrounds; but if you want a certain shot in a certain location, please place it on the list as well. Any not-so-obvious thing that you would like photographed, please place on the list and we’ll try our best to capture it with our creativity and artistry.

Please provide this list as a Word Document or as an organized list in Excel or in an email.

Meet the Event Loft Wedding and Event Planning Team

January 11th, 2011

Wayyyy back in the early days of Lin and Jirsa Photography… OK, so maybe “way back” really isn’t that far back, but when we first started shooting professionally, we actually did all sorts of types of photography. We shot for advertisements, commercials, events, portraits, fashion, etc. However, once we started shooting weddings and engagements, we sort of fell in love and never looked back.

While today, we focus on wedding and engagement photography, we will do the occasional commercial, editorial, portrait or whatever kind of shoot when it is our friends and past clients requesting them.

You loyal blog followers may have heard their name mentioned here and there. However, today I have the wonderful pleasure of showing and formally introducing you to the The Event Loft Team. These five girls are not only great friends of ours, they are also some of the most talented coordinators and planners we have had the chance to work with.

When we were approached by Adina to do a team shot that is going to be featured in several prominent wedding magazines, we jumped at the opportunity. So, for all of you brides and grooms out there looking for a planner/coordinator, be sure to check them out!

For the shot, I suggested we do a mixture of a lifestyle and editorial look which the girls seemed to dig. To pull it off, we used a combination of HDR + tungsten + modified natural light photography to achieve the effect. Yeah, it really was actually as complicated as it sounds. But, it turned out great and hopefully everyone loves it!

Limoneira Ranch Wedding Santa Paula | Christine and Wesley

December 1st, 2010

Christine and Wesley were married at the Limoneira Ranch wedding venue in Santa Paula, CA; and it was no surprise that the stylish, unique, and fun couple chose a wedding location with so much personality. The venue is uncommonly cute and intimate, with gorgeous lemon groves and a quaint reception hall. The outdoor ceremony area was perfect during their wedding day, with beautiful blue skies and a hint of clouds to add a little character.

We’ve seen hundreds of weddings, but maybe none as unique as Wesley and Christine’s. For example, immediately after their ceremony, Christine and Wesley went right into a “we’re married dance” that continued as they wedding party walked away back down the aisle. At the cocktail hour there was bocce ball for the guests to enjoy. Even their non traditional, fashion-forward style of dress were completely their own and a reflection of their fun personalities.

Wesley and Christine, thank you for letting us crash the party (and take some pictures); and we hope you enjoy them! Also, thank you to Fizzah Raza for her second shooting on this gig.

Welcome to the Family Ethan Jon Jirsa

October 13th, 2010

Life is crazy, it seems like just last month I was goofing around getting into trouble with my friends back in high school, a week ago I was serving my mission, and just yesterday I had graduated from the University of Utah and begun my career here in Los Angeles. In reality, high school ended 13 years ago, I returned from my mission nearly 10 years ago, and I graduated from university 5 years ago.

I don’t know how to say it without it sounding cliche, so I will just say it anyway, time flies… Time flies, and then one day you realize that you are staring into the eyes of your newborn baby boy. I find, thinking of myself as a father brings back the same reminiscent strangeness I felt back when I first earned the title of husband 8 years ago.

Life  is crazy. But, that is what makes it so enjoyable isn’t it? 15 Years ago, I would have never believed that one day I would speak fluent Cantonese and Mandarin and be happily married to a wonderful Chinese girl. 10 Years ago I would never have believed that I would one day earn a living doing what I love, creating art through photography. January of 2010, I never would have thought I would be witnessing my son Ethan’s birth that same year.

Possibilities is what makes life so interesting. Possibilities is what makes me content to simply stare at Ethan for hours. Not for the possibilities of what I hope and want for Ethan’s future. I think parents of preemies really only hope for one thing, a healthy happy child. Rather I spend my time thinking of the possibilities of what kind of life Ethan will decide to make for himself. Where will he be in 10, 20 or 30 years?

For now, I look forward most to the day Renee and I can bring happy and healthy Ethan home from the NICU.

Those of you that are close to Renee and I know how difficult and stressful the past 3 weeks have been. I wish to thank each and everyone of you for your continual love and support. Not a day has past without hearing a close friend call and ask if we needed anything. We are blessed to have you all in our lives. Thank you.

The picture below was shot last Tuesday the 5th at 10:39pm right after Ethan was born, cleaned and placed on his little bed. Ethan was delivered via c-section and both he and Renee are doing beautifully. There will be many more pictures to come, but for now, I just want to post something for everyone to see.

Again, thank you for all of your support and love.

Sincerely,

Pye Jirsa

Proud Father and Partner of Lin and Jirsa Photography

P.S. I also want to also thank and ask all of our clients who are waiting on their weddings, engagement sessions and portraits to be completed to forgive me. Being that I am in charge of the post production process, we have fallen a bit behind over the past few weeks. Thank you all so much for your patience, support and understanding.

And now, meet Ethan =)
