UC Berkeley Engagement Photography | Sam and Mike

I met up with Sam and Mike on the campus of my alma mater, UC Berkeley, for their engagement shoot. I’ve always loved Berkeley for all that it is, but I’ve never really taken a glance at it with the eye of wedding/engagement photography. I never noticed how well the entire campus photographed, from the tall redwoods behind Dwinelle Hall to the Modern Architecture of the Hearst Memorial Mining Building. Sam and Mike were awesome, posing naturally, even as the students rushed in and out of the frame. Sam and Mike are going to have a great wedding later this year, blending their unique personalities and cultures into what’s going to be a truly awesome experience; and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

The Hearst Mining Memorial Building on the campus of UC Berkeley, with a great pool for reflections and unique architecture for a nice backdrop, makes a great location for engagement photography.

Sam and Mike were great sports about everything, from carrying each other to swinging each other around, all for the sake of getting these types of expressions.

The University Library of UC Berkeley has that classic architecture that photographs great with a fisheye lens.

The benches in front of Dwinelle Hall, where I used to spend hours a day hanging out in college, was a great spot to relax in between our shots.

There’s always some time for some fun shots to bring out some great expressions.

Sam’s eyes and smile were too beautiful to not feature in a few photos.

The Campanile is the classic symbol of UC Berkeley; and this engagement photography session would not be complete without featuring it’s grandeur.

On their first date, Sam and Mike fed squirrels at this location. I can’t help but think about what a trip it would be if it was the exact same squirrel is this little guy.

Laguna Beach Engagement Photography | Kat and Brandon Engagement

A few days ago, we took Kat and Brandon out on an engagement shoot in Laguna Beach. Our good buddy and assistant Anthony also came along for the trip to help out with the shoot. Kat and Brandon are a gorgeous little engineering couple that work at Northrop Grumman. They actually heard of the studio through some other friends/clients of ours that also work at Northrop Grumman. I think we may just become the official wedding photographers of the folks at Northrop Grumman, haha.

Anyway, we first started the shoot over at the Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach, and upon arrival, we found the perfect little cliff overlooking the ocean. When Kat and Brandon arrived, the sun was in the perfect position behind the clouds and we were able to start our shoot off with the first shot that you see below. We had a blast with Kat and Brandon and between chatting, hanging out, and generally just having fun we did manage to shoot a few shots, which I think turned out quite well, but I will let you all decide for yourselves. Enjoy the pics!

Being quite the athletic couple, Kat and Brandon brought a football along with them for the beach portion of our shoot at Victoria Beach. Look at Kat’s arm! I don’t know about her passer rating, but I am sure that Brandon agrees that she looks quite fly throwing that ball!

Kat had some of the best expressions as she was waiting to catch Brandon’s passes, so, why not do a little “shoot-through” action.

I couldn’t decide which picture to post, the black and white version or the colored version, so I decided to post both. These shots were created by using three bracketed exposures combined into an HDR (High Dynamic Range) shot, with the dramatic cloudy skies of Laguna Beach in the backdrop and the beautiful tide pools in the foreground.

San Juan Capistrano Engagement Photography | Eric and Betty

This week, we had the chance to shoot our friends Eric and Betty’s engagement photos in San Juan Capistrano. Now, let me just say that I love adventurous brides and brides-to-be. But I don’t think that many get more adventurous than Betty. Mind you, that she forgot to bring along her tennis shoes. But, that didn’t stop her from hiking and climbing her way into some of the coolest shots we have taken.

Eric and Betty are a gorgeous couple, as you can see from the photos below. But, their relationship and interactions were simply wonderful to capture on film. They have such a close relationship with each other that bringing out their personalities and emotion in each scene seemed simply effortless.

Anyway, Eric and Betty, congratulations. I had a blast hanging out with you both, and I can’t wait for the wedding. Congratulations guys, we hope you enjoy the pics.

San Marino Engagement Photography | Huntington Library | Colin and Josie

This past weekend, we had the chance to hang out and shoot some photos of our friends Colin and Josie, a gorgeous couple mind you, at the Huntington Library Gardens. Upon arriving, we found a wonderful little cove where we did our portrait session as well as a few unique artistic shots, you know, just to get the photographer juices flowing before heading into the actual garden.

In classic LJP fashion, we made sure Colin and Josie showed us a few goofy faces during their portrait session.

In the same cove of trees outside of the Huntington Library in San Marino, we took a few intimate shots as well.

Once we entered into the Huntington Library, we were surprised to find out that we only had 45 minutes of shoot time before they closed the gardens! I guess we got a little caught up with our wonderful portrait session in our little private cove. Anyway, got into the garden, quickly got our maps, and cruised all over shooting everything we could find. To be honest, I was amazed at just how much there was to shoot at the Huntington Library Gardens. It was insane how many awesome spots there were.

The Huntington Library in San Marino has some great gardens, perfect for shots right at sunset.

The Park Benches at Huntington Library are also a picturesque scene for engagement photos.

While we could have spent the entire day there shooting and still not really put a dent into all the crazy locations the park has to offer, I am quite pleased with our 45 minute run. We got tons of great shots that we hope you enjoy.

Fullerton Engagement Session | Tania and Reuben

Tania and Reuben met each other at Ziings in Fullerton. So what better place to shoot their engagement session? We went all around downtown Fullerton, playing with the architecture in Villa Del Sol, the unique lighting in Ziings, and the great textures of the random buildings in the area. After a couple hours of getting to know this awesome couple, I can already tell that their wedding is going to be awesome, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

Angels Knoll | Los Angeles Engagement Photography | Dave + Kim
